05 May Castlecomer: talent runs in the family

If Teagan and Sara had a bunch of brothers and cousins who listened to The Strokes while growing up, started a band and added some synth, you’d get Castlecomer.

This indie rock quintet are based out of Sydney, Australia and UGH — THEY’RE SO GOOD. The band just dropped its new single “Move” on April 19 and it’s this dancey, Portugal The Man-esque groove that will have you swooning.

Also, I wasn’t kidding about the “brothers and cousins” part. These jerks actually have their talent coursing through their gene pool because the band is comprised of Bede and Patch, who are cousins, Tommy and Joe who are brothers and Neely, a friend they’ve known since elementary school.

Catching Castlecomer is going to be a big deal because it’s the group’s last performance in the United States before they celebrate the release of “Move” back home.

We caught up with the band’s drummer, Pat “Patch” Kennedy, to give you an idea of what to expect when the band takes on the JetBlue stage later today:

SunFest: How would you describe your sound?

Patch: Guitars, synths, fast drums and attitude.

SF: Who are your top three biggest musical influences?

Patch: The Strokes, The Beatles and Carole King.

SF: You’re doing a mix of summer music festivals and solo shows this summer. What’s better?

Patch: There’s something in the air at a music festival, like everyone is on holiday rather than just having a night out. It’s a great vibe whichever side of the stage you’re on.

SF: Have you been to Florida before? What are you looking forward to?

Patch: No, never been. [I’m] looking forward to beach weather, and some sportsmanlike heckling during Ice Cube’s set.

SF: If you could catch any other performer at SunFest, who would it be and why?

Patch: Grouplove. They are on after us. They’re bloody great entertainers.

SF: What are you most excited about for your SunFest performance?

Patch: Getting in the faces of some Floridians for the first time. It sure as hell won’t be the last! It’ll also be the first time we have our name on an LED screen behind us. Bring it on!

SF: What can people expect from your set?

Patch: Ten bangers. And less curse words than usual.

SF: Anything additional you’d like to add.

Patch: 2 plus 2 is 4, minus 1 that’s 3. Quick maths.
