18 Apr A healthy dose of reality with DREAMERS
I have always had a weakness for psychedelic indie rock tunes. Bands like MGMT, Tame Impala (go get their new album), and The Vaccines always summon the perfect blend of colorful dance beats and thoughtful-provoking lyrics, which will forever get extra love on my playlists. Before I even heard DREAMERS’ music, I saw their website, and I had a very good idea that their sound and my ears would be a match made in heaven.
I’m not the only one intrigued by their prismatic tunes. The Brooklyn trio has been praised by Billboard, Spin, and Hype Machine. They’ve also supported well-loved bands like The 1975, Bear Hands, Walk the Moon, and most recently Stone Temple Pilots on tour. On Saturday, May 2, Nick Wold (vocals, guitar), Chris Bagamery (drums, backup vocals), and Nelson (bass, backup vocals, no last name provided) will take on SunFest.
Before their South Florida show, we had a chance to pick Wold’s brain about DREAMERS current tour, their upcoming album, and what Wold dreamed last night.
What can SunFest fans expect to see and hear on Saturday, May 2?
A massive collection of souls, united in the tropical sun, gathered to transcend the normal plane of human existence through the power of music. Also tunes, and good times.
Stone Temple Pilots will also be at our sunny festival. You are about to begin touring with them. What are you most looking forward to during those shows?
We have STP to thank for our appearance at Sunfest, and it will be the last show of our entire month run opening up for them. We are thrilled. As I write this, we are backstage at our first show with them in our hometown of Seattle. Since we’re based in Brooklyn, this is our first ever show in Seattle, and for it to be at the legendary Paramount Theatre is a dream come true.
I saw on your website you also have a show with X Ambassadors. Have you played with/been introduced them before? (I’m also a big fan of their sound. That will be a great show.)
We first heard X Ambassadors through Sirius radio’s Alt Nation channel, but have never met them! We are super pumped that we’re getting to play with them. So many great shows lie ahead of us.
What’s the first thing you do after a show?
Hi-five everyone who was dancing!!
“This Album Does Not Exist” is set to release later this summer. Do you have a firmer date? What are you most proud of on this upcoming release? Who is your ideal listener?
The album which does not exist is probably going to come out in the fall. It’s all very super secretive mostly because we still don’t know! Much more is coming soon, and we may be releasing another EP before the album.
What is your songwriting process like?
It usually starts with guitar chords, a strange little glimmer of an idea. Then we form it into a full song, and write the lyrics after. Every now and then lyrics come first. There’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s, and we try to come at it from a bunch of different angles.
When do you do your best work?
About two Red Bulls deep, or in the middle of a coffee fueled frenzy. Under pressure, or at the last minute, for sure.
Nick and Chris, you were both in the band Motive prior to Dreamers, and received high praise for your sound. Can you share a little bit about Motive’s ending and your decision to continue creating music together?
We had some creative differences within the band, and realized we needed a new energy and new direction to keep growing. We had a period of writing, and being unsure about what it was gonna be. Then Nelson came on as the final piece and Dreamers was born.
I love your psychedelic website. You also have a spot for people to submit their dreams. What do you do with them? Any super weird dream submissions you can share?
Thanks! We wanted it to look like a lost back alley of the Internet. And we love to play with the freaky psychedelic nature of dreams. Some people submit dreams as in goals, and some submit sleeping dreams. One girl described how she murdered us in her dream, freaky stuff man.
What did you dream last night?
I seem to remember being lost in some underground boat, and endlessly trying to find my backpack, but never quite getting to it. Does that ever happen to you?
What does the rest of 2015 have in store?
We will be touring, writing and recording endlessly, and the ‘dream machine’ will continue to grow like the sapling into the mighty oak.
And lastly, when are you happiest?
We are happiest when the full moon rises over America, and we can gaze up into the cosmos.
Don’t miss DREAMERS on the Tire Kingdom stage Saturday night!
