29 Apr Friday Preview: Cake and Joy
The weekend is finally here, folks! Juggling a full day of work AND dancing the night away is a gift, I tell you. A gift. If you’ve been with us since Wednesday, pat yourself on the back and treat yourself to an ice cold drink at 4:59 p.m.
Today SunFest is showcasing two incredible artists you must not miss.
The first is the Joy Formidable. These Welsh rockers won my heart over many, many moons ago. Their instantly recognizable, ferocious sound, led gallantly by Ritzy Bryan’s soaring vocals, is impossible not to love.
I remember live streaming the trio’s set during their 2011 Lollapalooza performance. Then, in 2013, I had a chance to see them in my Austin backyard at Austin City Limits. I was so, so close to the stage, and will never forget Bryan rushing off the stage and allowing fans to sweep their sweaty, wanting hands over her guitar, causing a noise I won’t soon forget.
This act knows how to rock. There is no other word for it. They aren’t flashy or distracting. Their music belongs at the very center of your attention, and you should give it to them today.
Do not miss the Joy Formidable on the Jet Blue stage, tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Now, let’s talk sweets.
Steve Aoki, the brilliant electro house musician and record producer, will be at SunFest tonight! I have so many words for this artist, and plan to save most for my review. Seriously, check back tomorrow morning.
But if you don’t already know, Aoki is well-known for something far sweeter than his delicious beats. He’s known for cake.
Well, throwing cake…directly into the faces of his loyal and loving horde of fans.
Tonight at SunFest, he won’t be throwing any random dessert. He’ll be smashing cakes from Lake Worth’s own Sugar Monkey.
“It’s been a very exciting week here at the Sugar Monkey,” pastry chef Jennifer Reed shared with us. “We are making a vanilla sponge cake with a vanilla chantilly [for Aoki].”
Reed, who has owned and operate Sugar Monkey for the past eight years, assured us the recipe for her delicious desserts, whether eaten or thrown, remains the same.
“We use our same tasty ingredients to make all of our cakes no matter what people are going to do with them.”
I know for a fact multiple cakes will be thrown tonight. We have an exclusive peek at one included here. Looks like him, doesn’t it?
So, do you want the most incredible cake in South Florida thrown in your face? Of course you do. I sure as hell do!
Get caked and crazy tonight with Steve Aoki!!
