04 May Vendor Spotlight: The Wander Shop
Like any good music festival, SunFest isn’t just about who you’ll be hearing, but also what you’ll be wearing.
And from two-piece sets and rompers to dresses and bralettes, Marisa Folz will be on hand to help you lock in your beach festival looks.
Folz started The Wander Shop two years ago in Fort Lauderdale and I promise you’ll know it when you see it. The chrome Airstream is equipped with carefully curated men’s and women’s clothing and accessories.
One of my favorite items from The Wander Shop is a compact mirror with a llama on it that says “llive happy” — I love a good llama pun, OK? My mom got it for me at Folz’s permanent spot at the Eucalyptus Gardens/The YARD. That’s right, Folz has TWO glammed out Airstreams — one that’s stationary and one that travels to pop up shops, flea markets and SunFest.
We chatted with Folz today to get to know a little more about The Wander Shop. She also highlighted some festival-ready looks that you can purchase this weekend.
SunFest: How’d The Wander Shop get its start?
Marissa Folz: I grew up with both of my parents being entrepreneurs and doing what they love which inspired me to have the drive to open up The Wander Shop. I wanted the freedom to be able to travel and still make money which led me to creating the shop inside of an Airstream. We opened the doors to our flagship Airstream in April 2016 at Eucalyptus Gardens in Wilton Manors. I fell in love with the location and our customer base there and decided to make it a permanent spot. A few months later, I got another Airstream that is now our traveling shop.
SF: Give us some background on yourself
MF: I was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale. I graduated from UCF with an Event Management BS Degree. I have the cutest golden retriever pup named Banjo (@goldenbanjo on insta) I’m always down for an adventure, tacos, and a margarita!
SF: What advantages and disadvantages does running a pop up shop have?
MF: Advantages:
- Always being in a new environment
- Meeting so many different people
- Reaching out to different markets of people
Disadvantages:
- A lot of prep work goes into it
- Setting up is not as easy as everyone thinks it is. We have to be the first to arrive and last to leave.
- We have to secure everything so things don’t fall while driving. Then when we get to the event we have to put everything out and merchandise entire store
- There are always technical issues! Especially with having a generator. We always prepare for the worst.
SF: How do you decide what to sell at TWS?
MF: I always try to look for brands or items that not a lot of other places have. If it’s already a huge trend, I get pretty turned off by it. I am a huge small business supporter so I always am looking for new independent artists/brands to have at the shop!
SF: How would you describe the shop’s ~vibe~ to someone who has never been?
MF: I am a total California dreamer so the shop definitely has the Cali vibe to it. I am all about positivity and good vibes and you can feel that energy within the shop.
Here are some of Marisa Folz’s picks that will be up for sale through Sunday:
1. ‘Odessa’ overalls – $58
2. ‘Oxford’ crop top – $42
3. ‘Palm City’ romper
